Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn

The shadows have risen, and the line is law.

All Bree wanted was to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. So she infiltrated the Legendborn Order, a secret society descended from King Arthur’s knights—only to discover her own ancestral power. Now, Bree has become someone new:

A Medium. A Bloodcrafter. A Scion.

But the ancient war between demons and the Order is rising to a deadly peak. And Nick, the Legendborn boy Bree fell in love with, has been kidnapped.

Bree wants to fight, but the Regents who rule the Order won’t let her. To them, she is an unknown girl with unheard-of power, and as the living anchor for the spell that preserves the Legendborn cycle, she must be protected.

When the Regents reveal they will do whatever it takes to hide the war, Bree and her friends must go on the run to rescue Nick themselves. But enemies are everywhere, Bree’s powers are unpredictable and dangerous, and she can’t escape her growing attraction to Selwyn, the mage sworn to protect Nick until death.

If Bree has any hope of saving herself and the people she loves, she must learn to control her powers from the ancestors who wielded them first—without losing herself in the process.

Publishing Date: November 8, 2022

Genre: Fantasy

Age Group: YA

My Rating: 3/5

This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022. I loved Legendborn (I gave it 4.5/5 stars!).

Unfortunately, Bloodmarked was kind of disappointing. I still liked the book, but I struggled with how juvenile the plot and characters were.

There were a lot of points in the book where the characters made obviously dumb decisions. I get that they're teenagers - but Selwyn is my age. He does not get a pass on his choices.

Those dumb decisions were used to get the plot to move in certain ways that did not always feel natural. That made this book nearly 50% too long for what it was. I love a good long fantasy novel, but this had the plot and impact of a 400 page book while pushing 600 pages.

The characters were also just alright. Will and Alice were awesome, but my favorite character underwent the most awful character assassination. I'll let you guess who my favorite is :)

Anyway, this was good, but not incredible. I think the discussions are still ones worth having in YA fantasy, and the writing is pretty strong overall.
